Former FBI Counterintelligence Chief Charles McGonigal received a 50-month prison sentence for breaching US sanctions and accepting secret payments from Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, a close aide to President Vladimir Putin.

Judge Jennifer Rearden, acknowledging McGonigal’s service to the country, highlighted the severity of flouting sanctions crucial to national security.

McGonigal has become the highest-ranking former official ever charged with a crime this year.

In August, he pleaded guilty and admitted to providing secret services to Deripaska in 2021.

The court ordered McGonigal to pay a $40,000 fine and forfeit $17,500; he also faces three years of supervised release.

In February, he faces another sentencing for concealing funds from an Albanian source.
