The Texas Supreme Court, composed of nine Republican justices, issued a ruling and opinion Monday—reversing the state’s judge’s emergency abortion access to a pregnant woman whose fetus has a fatal diagnosis.
The 20-week-pregnant Kate Cox—who is also a mother of two—has traveled outside the state to get her abortion. The Center for Reproductive Rights, which represents Cox, said the SC “ruling should enrage every Texan to their core.”
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and lawyers for the state argued that Cox’s attorneys did not sufficiently demonstrate,
- That she would suffer “immediate and irreparable injury” without an abortion.
- That her situation qualified for an exception to the state’s abortion laws.
