Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers said he feels “deeply ashamed” of his long-running relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and will pause all public appearances while he works to rebuild trust.
He would continue teaching at Harvard University despite mounting calls for the college to sever ties.
Summers said he takes full responsibility for continuing contact with Epstein, even after Epstein’s 2008 conviction.
A House committee released thousands of documents showing years of personal emails between the two men from 2013 to 2019.
The messages reveal banter about politics, sexist remarks, and Epstein advising Summers on his romantic life. The revelations triggered sharp criticism, with Senator Elizabeth Warren saying Summers “cannot be trusted” with students.
The Center for American Progress confirmed he has ended his fellowship.
