Meta is receiving criticism from its oversight board for deciding not to take down an altered video of President Joe Biden circulating on Facebook.

The video is disturbingly edited to look like Biden is inappropriately touching his granddaughter.

Meta said the video did not violate platform rules as it didn’t involve AI deepfake technology altering speech.

The Oversight Board—an external group established by Meta to review content moderation decisions on Facebook and Instagram—criticized the platform’s policy as “incoherent” and called for urgent revisions.

It stressed clearer Meta policies regarding manipulated media, which will increasingly target political figures during this election season. Such content has affected voting patterns in the past.

Meta is reviewing the board’s guidance and plans to respond publicly within 60 days.
