Former President Donald Trump voiced concerns about TikTok’s national security risks but hesitated to support its US ban, fearing it would benefit Facebook, which he criticized as “an enemy of the people.”

He admitted contemplating a TikTok ban during his presidency but left the decision to Congress, which did not pass a ban.

Trump’s remarks echoed his recent social media post accusing Facebook of election interference. Following his denouncement, Meta’s stock dropped about 4%.

Meanwhile, Congress is debating a bill aiming to force TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app or face severe restrictions within five months.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said he supports the legislation banning TikTok, and House Minority Leader Steve Scalise vowed to bring the bill to a floor vote this week.

President Biden backs the bill, but its passage requires Senate approval before becoming law.
