Firefighters in Southern California battled the rapidly spreading Canyon Fire in Ventura County on Thursday.

The blaze ignited near Lake Piru, about 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles, and quickly expanded from 30 acres to around 1,050 acres within hours.

Fueled by temperatures nearing 100 degrees Fahrenheit, low humidity, and dry vegetation, the fire prompted evacuation orders for more than 16,000 residents, according to Cal Fire and LandScan data.

Over 150 firefighters launched a major initial attack, supported by air tankers and helicopters.

The fire threatened homes and infrastructure as it burned through rugged terrain. Officials warned conditions could worsen.
