The 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula|USGS
A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula Wednesday, triggering tsunami warnings for Hawaii, northern California, and Japan.
The US Geological Survey said the event could rank among the ten strongest earthquakes ever recorded.
Waves about 4 feet above sea level hit parts of Hawaii, including Oahu and Maui. Flights were canceled, and harbors closed. The US military opened roads to aid evacuations.
In Russia, minor injuries were reported, and buildings, including a kindergarten and a fish plant, sustained damage.
Japan also issued a tsunami alert for waves reaching up to 10 feet, and advised 1.9 million people to seek higher ground. The waves recorded remained under one foot.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center continues to monitor wave activity.
