General Motors announced a new “groundbreaking” EV battery technology that could provide more range to its largest electric SUVs and trucks at a lower cost.
The automaker will use lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells instead of cobalt and nickel.
The LMR cells are historically known to offer a shorter lifespan, but GM’s breakthrough may change that.
The carmaker expects to be the first in the market and will use these batteries in its EVs beginning in 2028.
Ford is working on a similar tech, which it will launch in 2030.
