The five former Memphis police officers allegedly responsible for beating Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, to death were indicted for second-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and assault, among other charges Thursday.

Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith each face several charges. If found guilty of second-degree murder, the jailed officers would face between 15 to 60 years in prison.

Tyre Nichols died on January 10, three days after a traffic stop incident with five Black police officers left him beaten and in critical condition. The police officers were fired after an internal investigation.

Body cam footage of the fatal incident was shown to Tyre Nichols’s family members and is expected to be released to the public today.
