Overall, ‘Minions & Monsters’ has brought in $61 million since Wednesday|@Minions|X
The new minion movie from Universal and Illumination opened to a lukewarm reception in North America during the Fourth of July weekend, bringing in just $36 million from 4,243 theaters.
It marks a new franchise low, even behind 2010’s Despicable Me, which earned $56 million over the opening weekend.
Overall, Minions & Monsters has brought in $61 million since Wednesday, falling way short of its $80 million five-day projection in the US and Canada.
However, the animated movie released in June, Toy Story 5, was in the No. 2 spot, raking in $31 million from 3,975 venues, lifting its domestic total to $366 million and worldwide to $764 million.
In another milestone, the $750,000 budget indie breakout Obsession cleared $403 million in global ticket sales, following a $17 million May debut.
According to Rentrack, total industry ticket sales hit just $121 million, missing the usual Independence Day holiday average of $150 million to $200 million.
Analysts note that the live-action Moana, which is releasing this weekend, as well as upcoming releases like Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey alongside Spider-Man: Brand New Day, could finish July with a bang.
