The Milly Alcock-led film, for which the actress reportedly earned around $400,000, is expected to be a major financial loss for Warner Bros., with estimates putting the studio’s losses between $100 million and $120 million.
It also received poor reviews, including a 49/100 score on Metacritic.
Audience interest appears to be lower for lesser-known superhero characters, and some analysts have debated whether certain female-led superhero films have faced additional marketing or audience challenges. The movie has also been targeted by online review bombing, with some users posting negative reviews even though they haven’t seen it.
Supergirl marks WBD’s second 2026 flop following The Bride!, which earned $23 million worldwide against a $90 million budget.
The film’s performance stands in stark contrast to last summer’s Superman, which launched at $125 million and grossed $618 million worldwide.
However, analysts remain hopeful about the director James Gunn-led DC universe’s future. Clayface releases this October, followed next year by Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow.
Analysts also note that fans have become more selective about their superhero movies post-COVID.
