President Donald Trump arrived in China yesterday for a two-day summit.
He had a two-hour high-stakes meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, marking the first time a sitting president has visited China in a decade. Trump is expected to focus mainly on conversations regarding trade, the Iran war, and tariffs during the visit.
He was also accompanied by American business leaders, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, on Air Force One.
Xi said in his opening remarks that the two nations “should be partners, not rivals.”
Both leaders are expected to discuss Iran, trade, and AI. An extension of last October’s trade truce appears likely.
They also reached a vital agreement that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to protect the international oil trade and stabilize markets.
The US also wants China to reopen access to rare earth materials used in electronics and vehicles. Meanwhile, Beijing hopes to secure more advanced chips from US firms.
While the dialogue was characterized as productive, Xi issued a stern warning regarding US-Taiwan relations, labeling it as a “very dangerous” flashpoint in the bilateral relationship.
There are reports that the United States and China are working to establish a “Board of Trade” mechanism, with each nation identifying approximately $30 billion worth of goods for mutual tariff reductions.
