Gas prices have risen sharply, with the national average reaching $4.52 per gallon on Monday, per AAA

President Donald Trump said he will temporarily suspend the federal gas tax to help Americans deal with rising fuel prices caused by the Iran war. However, Congress must approve the plan.

The federal gas tax adds 18.4 cents per gallon to gasoline prices and 24.4 cents per gallon to diesel fuel prices. It helps fund highways and public transportation projects.

Gas prices have risen sharply, with the national average reaching $4.52 per gallon on Monday, according to AAA. It was under $3 a gallon before the Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Republican Senator Josh Hawley plans to introduce a bill to suspend the tax.

With Trump rejecting Iran’s response to the latest US proposal, the conflict appears far from over. The ceasefire remains fragile, with the president calling it “on massive life support.”
