New York City appointed its first Latino person as the police chief.

Edward Caban, a Bronx native of Puerto Rican descent, made history when he became the 46th police commissioner of the New York Police Department (NYPD) on Monday.

He joined the NYPD in 1991 and has served in various positions over the past 32 years. During his tenure as deputy commissioner, there was a significant reduction in shootings and murders.

Additionally, Tania Kinsella’s appointment as deputy commissioner is noteworthy as she became the first person of color to hold the position.
