President Donald Trump had a closed-door meeting with China’s Xi Jinping for the second day of the summit.
Xi said China and the United States agreed on a more stable relationship and that both countries would work toward a “constructive, strategically stable relationship” that could shape ties for years. Trump said Washington and Beijing had resolved “a lot of different problems,” although neither side announced any major agreements.
Trump said Xi offered to help ease tensions in the Middle East and promised not to send military equipment to Iran. However, China gave no sign it would pressure Tehran to meet US demands.
According to the White House, Thursday’s meeting ended with both leaders agreeing that the Strait of Hormuz should stay open and that Iran must never develop a nuclear weapon.
Trump ended his two-day Beijing visit with a rare tour of Zhongnanhai, the heavily guarded compound where China’s top leaders live and work, alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping.
He also said China agreed to buy US oil, Boeing jets, and American agricultural products, although Beijing did not confirm the deals.
